In today's digital world, a password alone is often not enough to keep your accounts secure. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is an essential security measure that adds a critical second layer of defense.

What is 2FA?

Two-Factor Authentication, also known as multi-factor authentication (MFA), requires you to provide two different forms of identification to access an account.

When you enable 2FA, after you enter your password (the first factor), the system requests a one-time passcode (OTP) from an authenticator app on your phone (the second factor) before granting access.

Why You Need 2FA: Security Benefits

2FA dramatically reduces the risk of unauthorized access to your accounts, even if your password is stolen.

  • Protection Against Stolen Passwords: If a hacker obtains your password through a data breach, phishing attack, or malware, they still cannot access your account without the second factor (the code generated on your personal device).

  • Defense Against Phishing: Phishing attacks try to trick you into revealing your login credentials. With 2FA, providing your password to a fake site isn't enough; the attacker still won't be able to generate the unique code from your device.

  • Identity Theft Prevention: By securing your most important accounts (like email and banking), 2FA acts as a robust shield, preventing cybercriminals from taking over your digital identity.

Recommended Authenticator Apps

Using a dedicated authenticator app is generally more secure than relying on SMS text messages for your 2FA codes, as apps generate codes locally on your device and are not vulnerable to phone number porting scams.

Here are a few popular and reliable authenticator apps:

  • Google Authenticator: A straightforward and widely supported app. It's simple to use and has recently added an option for encrypted cloud backup.

  • Microsoft Authenticator: Excellent for users in the Microsoft ecosystem. It offers push notifications for login approval (instead of typing a code) and allows for secure cloud backup.

  • Twilio Authy: A favorite for its ease of use, including end-to-end encrypted cloud backup and the ability to sync your 2FA tokens across multiple devices.

  • Duo Mobile: Popular in corporate environments but great for personal use too. Its strength is its simple push-based authentication, which lets you approve or deny a login attempt with a single tap.

  • 2FAS Authenticator: An open-source, free app that is highly rated for its ease of use and ability to work across all your devices, often without requiring a separate account.

  4. Using the authenticator app, scan the QR code that appears in the set up modal.

  5. After the QR is scanned, the authenticator app will provide a verification code, enter this code in the field provided in the setup modal, then click “Verify & enable”.

Logging in with a 2FA Login

To login, you will still go to https://admin.eventive.org to login

  1. Enter your email and password and press “Login”

  2. Open your authenticator app to retrieve the 6 digit 2FA code.

  3. Enter the 2FA code in the login field provided.
