Use membership rules to set up the benefits for each membership bucket. Create membership rules for item orders to add benefits to a membership that enables discounted or free item orders via the box office.

Membership rules for item buckets allow your members to order discounted or free items from your box office. Membership rules for items are compatible with both the Eventive dashboard box office and the Box Office App.

Membership rules for items only apply to item buckets that have fixed prices, they don’t apply to items with variable prices (like donations).

In the sample image below, you will notice that the Poster (a fixed price item) is discounted by 25%, and the Donation (a variable priced item) remains unaffected.

Add a Membership Rule

To create or edit membership rules, select Membership Rules from the blue bar at the top of the membership bucket settings page, then click Add new rule.

When you click “Add new rule” a new rule block will be added to the page. Click edit to start configuring the rule.

Rule Name

By default, the membership rule will be called “Membership Rule #” (where the number represents the sequence in which the membership rules were created).

It is best practice to name your membership rules something descriptive that will help you understand them at a glance.

Example: for a 10% off discount on Concessions, you might call the rule something like “ITEMS - 10% OFF - Popcorn & Drink Combo”

For global rules, you might also include an abbreviation for the event bucket that the rule applies to in the Rule Name.

A good descriptive name will be easily scannable, help you put your rules in the right order and help anyone proofing your membership rules understand what the intended purpose of the rule is.

When editing your membership rules, if you change the result, be sure to reflect that change in your Rule Name as well so that they always match.

Example: If you change your Item Discount from 10% off to 15% off, be sure the change the rule name from “ITEMS - 10% OFF - Popcorn & Drink Combo” to ““ITEMS - 15% OFF - Popcorn & Drink Combo”

Membership Rule Type

Under "Type," select “Item orders”. This will allow you to create a rule for free or discounted items.

Membership Rule Target

Under "Target," you will specify to which items the rule can be applied to.

You can select “Apply to all item buckets”, or you can select the item buckets to include in the rule.

NOTE: For item buckets with variable price items, even if an item bucket containing a variable priced item is added to a membership rule, the variable price item will not be modified by the membership rule. Similarly, checking apply to all item buckets will not discount variable priced items, by default they are excluded from being targeted by a membership rule.

Membership Rule Result

You MUST specify a result or the membership rule will have no effect on the price of the item!

Select either:

  • Percent off (0 - 100) of the list item price for matched items

  • Dollars off of the list item price for matched items

Use Restrictions

  • Number of target items per membership : Restrict the number of items that the discount can be applied to. If unlimited, the discount can be applied to every item order a customer places through the box office. If you specify a quantity of items per membership, then the rule will apply until the benefit is used up and then the discount will no longer apply.

NOTE: this is a per item discount, not a per order discount.

Example: A membership is configured to allow 5 discounted concession items and those concession items are Soda, Popcorn and Candy – each is set up as its own item bucket, with a fixed price and 1 portion is equal to 1 item. In this case, a member could use their discount for 2 sodas, 1 popcorn, and 1 candy and still have 1 use of their discount left to apply to their next trip to your cinema.

Other Restrictions

  • Restrict based on the current time (when the membership is used to place the order): Select this to set the start and end time for which the membership rule is active and able to be applied to orders. By making some membership rules active before others can help automate sales in situations where certain members may have preferred access to item discounts. Perhaps you might consider using a timed discount when pre-selling your merchandise items or at the end of a festival to clear any remaining inventory.

Global Rule

Checking this box allows you to apply this membership rule to event buckets other than the one in which it was created. This is especially useful for applying membership benefits to festivals or special events that have their own unique event bucket.

Save Changes

When you finish creating a rule or editing a rule, click Save to record the change. Clicking save will close the editing window for that rule. A summary of the rule will now be displayed on the membership rules page.

To exit the rule editing window without saving your changes, click “Close”.

Create Multiple Rules

Create an unlimited number of membership rules and they will be combined, or "stacked." For example, a 50% off discount from one rule + a 25% off discount from another = 75% off total. Membership rules are applied in order, so you can control a cascade of benefits however you choose to design them.

Re-order Membership Rules

If you discover that the order of your membership rules needs to be changed, so that the benefits and restrictions apply properly in sequence, you can change the order of your membership rules by clicking the arrow buttons that are located next to the “Edit” button in the membership rule list, or next to the delete button in the membership rule editing window.
